The EFC is the amount the federal government calculates your family can afford to pay toward college each year. It's based on income, assets, family size, and number of students in college. Your financial need equals the Cost of Attendance minus your EFC. Note: starting with the 2024-2025 FAFSA, the EFC has been replaced by the Student Aid Index (SAI), which works similarly.
This provides a rough estimate using simplified formulas. The actual FAFSA uses a complex federal methodology with many additional factors (taxes paid, untaxed income, number of family members in college, etc.). Use this as a starting point, then complete the FAFSA for your official EFC and aid eligibility.
The Federal Pell Grant is need-based aid for undergraduate students that does not need to be repaid. The maximum award is $7,395 for 2024–2025. Eligibility is primarily based on your EFC — generally, families with income under $60,000 qualify for some amount, and those under $30,000 often qualify for the maximum.
Include savings accounts, checking accounts, investments (stocks, bonds, mutual funds), 529 plans, and real estate (other than your primary home). Exclude retirement accounts (401k, IRA), the value of your primary home, personal property, and small businesses with fewer than 100 employees if family-owned.
