Fraction operations follow straightforward rules. For addition and subtraction, the fractions must share a common denominator — you convert them by cross-multiplying the denominators, then combine the numerators. For multiplication, multiply straight across: numerator times numerator, denominator times denominator. Division flips the second fraction (its reciprocal) and then multiplies. After every operation the result is simplified by dividing both parts by their greatest common divisor (GCD). This calculator shows each step so you can follow the process and verify your own work.
To add fractions with different denominators, find a common denominator by multiplying the two denominators together (or find the least common multiple). Convert each fraction so they share that denominator, then add the numerators. For example, 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
Divide both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 8/12: the GCD of 8 and 12 is 4, so 8/12 simplifies to 2/3. This calculator simplifies results automatically.
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. For example, 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12, which simplifies to 1/2. Unlike addition and subtraction, you do not need a common denominator.
Multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Flip the second fraction (swap its numerator and denominator) and then multiply. For example, 1/2 ÷ 1/3 = 1/2 × 3/1 = 3/2, or 1 1/2 as a mixed number.
A fraction like 7/4 is called an improper fraction because the numerator is larger than the denominator. A mixed number expresses the same value as a whole number plus a proper fraction: 7/4 = 1 3/4. This calculator shows both forms.
