Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardized way of measuring academic achievement in the United States. It is used by colleges, graduate schools, and employers to evaluate academic performance. Most institutions use a 4.0 scale where A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. Some schools also use plus/minus grades (e.g., A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3) for more granular measurement.
GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing the results, and dividing by the total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course gives (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) / (3+4) = 3.43 GPA.
A GPA of 3.0 or above (B average) is generally considered good. A 3.5 or higher is often required for Dean's List recognition, and a 3.7+ is considered excellent. Requirements vary by program — graduate school admissions often look for 3.0+, while competitive programs may expect 3.5+.
An unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for all classes. A weighted GPA gives extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses (e.g., an A in AP = 5.0 instead of 4.0). This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale with credit-hour weighting.
